Sweeter than honey: Middle Tennessee community comes together at second annual honey festival

Thousands of Tennessee residents gathered Sept. 7 at Memorial Park in Hendersonville to learn about pollinators, talk with beekeepers and buy locally grown honey. Memorial Park in Hendersonville, Tenn. gets its fair share of bees on any given day, but on Saturday, Sept. 7, the number of small, yellow-striped visitors skyrocketed. The second annual Tennessee Honey Festival, hosted by U.S. Pest Protection, drew in hundreds of the insects – and members of the Middle Tennessee community – from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last year, the first ever iteration of the festival was a huge success, drawing in more than 10 thousand visitors and dozens of local beekeepers to buy and sell honey, honey-based products and bee-themed clothing and jewelry. This year, there were more than double the tents for participating vendors. The Mobile Bee Yard was a new and exciting addition this year; visitors explored a small trailer with mesh walls designed to house a few hundred bees and one beekeeper. Children and adults alike lined up outside the trailer, waiting for the opportunity to play with the bees, made possible by a set of gloves affixed into the wall of the trailer that reached inside. The festival al...

Snowstorm hits northern Rocky Mountains; Montana gets brunt

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Areas of the northern Rocky Mountains looked more like mid-winter rather than early fall on Sunday as a snowstorm dumped record amounts of wind-driven snow that caused hazardous travel conditions and scattered power outages. Winter storm warnings were posted for parts of western Montana, northern Idaho and northeast Washington. Snow also was forecast for areas in Wyoming, Utah, Oregon, Nevada and California. The brunt of the storm hit Montana where up to 2 feet (61 centimeters) of snow fell Saturday in the mountains and a record 14 inches (35.5 centimeters) fell in Great Falls with snow still falling Sunday. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock declared an emergency Sunday, allowing the state to mobilize resources to help affected areas. “With an unprecedented winter storm throwing our state a surprise in September, state and local governments are working closely together to protect the health and safety of Montanans and our top priority is making sure that happens,” Bullock said in a statement. “Montanans should heed all warnings from state and local officials, travel safely, and be cautious during this time.” Major interstates and highways remained open, but snow a...

Away Luggage Launches Lifestyle Tote Bags Longitude and Latitude

There’s a reason Away has amassed a dedicated following over the past few years. The brand’s luggage is chic, durable and reasonably priced, and the fashionable suitcase sets are also carefully designed for all your travel needs. Away started out with its classic polycarbonate suitcase, but the line quickly evolved to include carry-alls, weekenders and many an adorable accessory. And now, the brand is expanding further into the lifestyle realm, with the launch of its first-ever tote bags, the Latitude and the Longitude. The two totes are designed for all kinds of travel and everyday life—a weeklong journey, a day at the office, a quick getaway and everything in between. The bags are sleek, simple and easy to carry around. They’re roomy enough to fit everything you might need to put in your purse on your next trip, a day running around for appointments or just fitting all your work essentials. The major difference in the Latitude and Longitude is that the former is a horizontal style, while the latter is vertical. There’s a band on the back of the totes that you can attach to your Away suitcase, but you can also unclip the band and stick it inside the tote if you don’t need it. T...

First Look at BRUTØ – Kelly Whitaker’s New Test Kitchen Restaurant Opening Friday

If you keep up with Denver’s food scene at all, you know Kelly Whitaker has been busy this year. On top of Dry Storage taking off and the Wolf’s Tailor named one of America’s 10 best new restaurants by Bon Appétit, Whitaker is partnering with Raan Parton, co-founder of Free Market, to bring a test-kitchen, grain-focused, counter-service restaurant to the Diary Block. The name, BRUTØ, is a Spanish word that translates literally to “stupid,” but it also can mean crude or straight from the earth. Whitaker is focusing on the latter, creating a menu around heirloom grains and fresh ingredients, either left raw or cooked with fire in a wood oven. Though nothing Whitaker does could be considered ordinary, BRUTØ certainly is not your average downtown restaurant. As a big fan of heirloom grain, Whitaker wanted to plant a field of wheat and open his new enterprise when the crops came to harvest – so that’s what he did.  Working directly with farmers in the San Luis Valley, Whitaker’s crops covered about 60 acres and yielded around 200,000 pounds of grain last week. This partnership supports both rural farming and regenerative agriculture and allows BRUTØ to focus on sustainability throug...

This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. Holy smokes, cats ’n’ kittens, we are spoiled for choice this week in The ‘Nati. There are festivals aplenty and they run the gamut from the Alexandria Fair and Horse Show to the Cindependent Film Festival to ye olde Renaissance Festival. As if that’s not enough, there’s a tattoo convention in town, rock legends KISS take over Riverbend on Thursday and we are beginning another season of heartache … I mean football … as the Bengals host the Colts in a pre-season game. Steel mill blasts away lighting maintenance worries with LED conversion (MAGAZINE) (UPDATED)

The Russian-owned NLMK plant in western Pennsylvania used to spend inordinate time and money replacing bulbs. Britain’s Dialight is correcting the problem with long-life LED lighting while ushering in energy savings and other benefits, as Mark Halper discovers. The Russian-owned NLMK plant in western Pennsylvania used to spend inordinate time and money replacing bulbs. Britain’s Dialight is correcting the problem with long-life LED lighting while ushering in energy savings and other benefits, as MARK HALPER discovers. When you operate a rough-and-tough steel mill where the furnaces hit 2300°F, where hydrochloric acid washes impurities from finished metal, where industrial rollers crank and churn as they flatten slabs down from 10 inches to 1-inch sheets and smaller, where welders’ arcs flare in the maintenance room and workers fight dust and dirt everywhere, the last thing you want to worry about is replacing lightbulbs. Yet that’s what they were doing at the 350-acre NLMK steel works in Farrell, PA, about 70 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, both inside the cavernous halls and outside on the roads, the parking lots, and at the pumping station along the She...
